Pawns of the Board (Beginners)
Overview: This group class assumes very basic or no prior knowledge of chess. Players learn the rules of the game, and then progress to tactics and more advanced play. The Chess-Steps curriculum is used to teach these beginner players in a group setting. Sessions begin with working on the assigned workbook, then a group lesson and discussion, and finally casual play. Players are expected to solve at least 2-3 puzzles in their workbooks daily.
Suggested age range: grades 2 - 6.
Meeting times: 4 Saturdays a month from 9:30 AM - 10:45 AM. First visit is free!

Fees:
- Program fees are $80/monthly per player, assuming 4 Saturdays a month. First visit is free?
- Monthly club membership fees can be submitted after September 1st, subsequent months are $80/monthly/per player and is auto-charged to credit card on file.
Curriculum:
- Workbooks from chess-steps.com, beginning with Step 1. See infographic for description of later curriculum. Workbook progression is Step 1, Step 1 Extra, Step 1 Plus, then finally Step 1 Mixed. Players typically take one year to finish 3+ workbooks.
Addendum:
- For families who will be missing 2+ club meetings in a month (not just one) and send 2 days advance notice to hello[at]wayoftheboard.org, fees will be refunded on a prorated basis ($40 for 2 Saturdays, $60 for 3 Saturdays, $80 for 4 Saturdays). Note that fees are not refunded for single day absences.
- When the instructor is not able to hold a class due to illness, a family schedule conflict, public holidays, etc., fees will be prorated accordingly.
- Club membership can be discontinued at any time by sending an email to hello@wayoftheboard.org, and a prorated refund for that month will be issued accordingly.
